What should I expect my relationship with my child’s adoptive parents to look like?

This is Susan. She has worked in the adoption world as a social worker for years, and especially cherished her time working alongside expectant parents, birth parents and adoptive parents. She's a great person to answer this question:

"What should I expect my relationship with my child’s adoptive parents to look like?"

One of the great aspects of adoption today is that you have a huge part of deciding what kind of ongoing relationship you would like to have with your child and their adoptive family. With the opportunity for an open adoption, this can look much like an extended family relationship and you can have ongoing connection to your child. And just like other relationships that are valuable to us, they go through phases and hard times that need to be worked through. When issues arise, rely on adoption professionals to help you navigate healthy communication.
