Did you know that BraveLove sends birthday mailers to birth moms?
These notes of encouragement are thoughtfully timed to arrive around their child’s birthday, offering comfort, acknowledgment, and support on such a meaningful day.
We’re incredibly grateful for the volunteer who makes this possible, and today we’re excited to shine a Volunteer Spotlight on our friend Elizabeth Gaines, who helps bring these heartfelt mailers to life.
Q: Tell us a little about yourself?
A: I live in McKinney, Texas, and I’m a mom of two—my eldest, whom I lovingly chose adoption for, and my daughter. I’m also a proud YaYa to three sweet grandchildren and two grand‑dogs… because the fur babies absolutely count. I created Michael’s Song (named after my son) to share my story as a Birth Mom and to encourage women on their journeys of healing, self‑discovery, and personal growth within a supportive community. I also host mindfulness‑based writing workshops that weave together reflection, creativity, and breathwork.

Q: How did you first hear about BraveLove?
A: In 2019, after the Triad Group at the adoption agency I placed with stopped meeting, I began searching for a community for birth moms. I was looking for an organization that supported the full triad (child, birth family, and adoptive family) and empowered mothers to share their stories. That search, along with a note from the then Agency Community Ambassador, led me to BraveLove. BraveLove’s mission aligned with mine and our heart for changing the narrative of adoption in a loving, supportive way.
Q: How did you first get involved with BraveLove?
A: My first BraveLove event was a virtual gathering during COVID. I immediately connected with the mission. Since then, I’ve supported BraveLove through volunteering and financial giving, and I encourage my family and friends, many of whom are part of the adoption triad, to do the same.
I have also hosted several birth mom dinners on behalf of BraveLove. I have enjoyed meeting birth moms in my area and connecting with them in this way.

Q: What impact has BraveLove had on you?
A: Being part of the BraveLove community has given me a sense of belonging, purpose, and connection with others who understand the beauty and complexity of adoption.
Q: Why do you enjoy sending out birthday cards to birth mothers?
A: Where do I start? 34 years ago when I chose adoption for my son and I, I created the language and space I needed on his birthday. My family understood the need I had to celebrate his birthday and supported my creating space to honor his special day. We did it as a family. Birthday mailers weren’t a part of post adoption support 34 years ago. I’m so blessed to be a part of this special gift in letting each mother know she’s not alone and being thought of on this special day.

Q: What impact do you hope your cards have on recipients?
A: I hope the cards bring joy and comfort. For some birth moms, receiving the card reminds them that they’re not alone, that another birth mom is thinking of them and honoring their child’s special day alongside them.
Q: What is one word to describe you?
A: Encourager
